Assignment 3

Assignment 3 - Task 1

Hello I am going to help my friend on purchasing a PC to work from home. I am going to give advice for him by a series of questions that he is going to ask me. These questions are all to do with his User Requirements. The headings below that are in bold are what the User wants to get with his PC some are hardware and some are software programs or applications.

1. Database Reports & Spreadsheets – I would recommend using Microsoft Office, because this has many applications in it e.g. Excel, Word, Publisher, PowerPoint. And is a reasonable price of £85.08. I chose this because it is a very good package with a lot of features and also has different applications that are very convenient. It also can carry out databases and spreadsheets.

2. Internet & Email – I would recommend SKY Broadband because it has a good fast download speed of 20MBPS and they have a great support team. I chose SKY because it gives you Unlimited Broadband and the Line Rental is only £12.25. It is also £5.00 for 6months then £10.00 afterwards. I chose this because I think it is a cheap broadband package and very good with unlimited web browsing and downloading.

Internet & Email – I would recommend BT because they are a very good and well known supplier of phone lines and Broadband Packages. I chose BT because they have a very good broadband package which can be a bit costly. But they provide great assistance when needed and also give you a fast download speed of 24MBPS. This would cost £14.00 for 3months then £24.00 afterwards.

3. Transfer Large Video Files – I would recommend for transferring large video files from one source to another would be to get an external Hard Drive. I chose a iOmega Compact Edition which is 500Gb and is quite cheap for the Memory at £44.97. I chose this because it is quite cheap but a large amount of memory which could store 100’s of videos, music, photos and documents etc.

4. Computer Games – I would choose a Game Controller which is good for playing PC Games. I recommend a SAITEK P380 Gamepad which is only £13.00 and is really good for the most advanced and newbie’s.

5. Digital Camera & Printer – I would choose a Canon Printer because they are a very good make of Printer and if you ever have any problems with it, they have a really good support team who will be willing to help you anytime you need assistance and this is also good for if you take digital photo’s also it is £180.19

Assignment 3 - Task 2

Hello my friend rang me earlier in the week about a problem he’s having with his computer at home. So I asked him what was the problem and he told me he recently started liking computer gaming and is experiencing slow response times and poor video quality.

The first thing I told him was he might not have enough (RAM) on his computer to run computer games as they take up usually 2GB of virtual memory on your computer and this is a lot of memory to be running at one time. So I referred him to a website where you can buy cheap RAM off and I told him if he has any problems that I would install it for him myself. Also a better graphics card will be good for HD videos and HD gameplay.

Ram – RAM is (Random Access Memory) this is memory that all your computer programs run on e.g. your office, adobe photoshop etc need to run on the operating system and this takes up a good amount of memory. you would need more RAM in order for your computer games to work perfectly and fast.

Graphics Card – A graphics card (also video card) is a piece of hardware installed in a computer that is responsible for rendering the image on the computer’s monitor or display screen. Graphics cards come in many varieties with varying features. they are really good for displaying HD graphics and HD gaming, depending on the one you get.

Running Scans – running scans frequently on your computer is very good for obtaining viruses and removing and quarantining them. This basically means to remove them from your computer.

Disk Defragmenter – Disk Defragmenter is a software utility which is built in to most operating systems. This helps to decrease the volume of the disk so that there is more space for programs to run on.

Disc Cleanup – this is cleaning up unwanted files on your computer and files you hardly use. These files are usually read only and can only be used once and you might never need to have them again. So there is no point leaving them around.
